Lately, I have been hearing more and more people who have been diagnosed with Celiac Disease or a Gluten-Intolerance say that now that they have been diagnosed, bye, bye dining out. I want to shake them and say, "What are you talking about"? "You don't have to stop your life, you just have to be careful"! I was out to dinner a few months ago with some friends at Schillers (owned by Bathlaazar and Pastis-GF friendly by the way), and I was talking to this lovely girl named Beth who told me that her friend and husband were on their honeymoon in Hawaii and her husband who was diagnosed with Celiac didn't want to eat a thing in fear of Gluten and cross-contamination. She said he lost about 10 pounds on his own honeymoon. I was aghast! We don't live in the stone ages here, and yes many people do not understand what a Gluten-Intolerance is or what Celiac is, but more and more restaurants, hotels and so forth are starting to understand. So many restaurants if not gluten-free, but gluten-free friendly can and will accommodate you. You just have to tell them either ahead of time, or ask. ASK, ASK, ASK. Always ASK. Don't be afraid to ask. This is your disease, your lifestyle only you can take charge and take care of yourself. Chances are the chef will be able to prepare something for you, even if it is a grilled piece of meat or fish with steamed veggies. I hope this post reaches out to many because I have Celiac and I dine out all the time!! I am just very open with the waiter about my dietary needs, and I usually speak to the manager of the restaurant wherever I am dining. Most managers will know what I am talking about and even the wait staff will. Of course you will always find some restaurants that don't but for the most part you are safe. If you by chance find a restaurant that does not understand, then order the simplest things. Order a piece of chicken, steak or fish naked and grilled with olive oil and lemon. That's easy isn't it? Or if it is an ethnic restaurant that you know will not be able to accommodate you then ask first and if it's not in the stars for you just skip it. There are plenty of other restaurants you can frequent. There are also certain foods that will always be gluten-free such as cheeses, meats some rice’s and risotto’s and veggies. Just say no to sauce if you don't know how it is prepared or if the waiter/manager cannot tell you what's in it. At that point you have to use your judgment. Now at some point in your gluten-free life you will unfortunately ingest gluten. It happens. The idea is to not let it happen often. Try and control it as much as you can, but please, please do not let yourself live in a bubble. Life is too good and too short. So by popular demand I am bringing you a plethora of GF friendly restaurants to your fingertips.
This is for the New York City area. I will add other posts for other states, cities and countries (coming soon) And check back often, because I will be consistantly updating these posts.
