Eat Your Way To GF Gorgeous

Grabbed out of one of my fashion magazines, InStyle to be exact, I tore out an article that inspired me.  I keep it taped to my fridge for inspiration.  Healthy options that are good for you and taste good at the same time.

Top 10

1. Lobster
Why it makes you pretty: In addition to offereing a good, low-fat source of protein (key for healthy hair growth), shellfish contains high amounts of zinc, a mineral which may help prevent acne and boost your immune function, says NYC nutritionist Keri Glassman, author of The Oz Diet.  Shellfish also has pantothenic acid, a B vitamin that makes hair look shinier.  Also try Oysters, clams and mussels.

2. Chia Seeds
Why it makes you pretty: These antioxidant-rich seeds are great sources of vitamin E and omega-3s, essential fatty acids that make skin glow and hair shine.  And unlike their cousins, flaxseeds, they don't need to be ground up for their beneficial oils to be absorbed.  Also try Flax, sunflower and pumpkin seeds.

3. Artichokes
Why it makes you pretty: Anything with lots of fiber-and one artichoke supplies 25 percent of an adult's daily quota--is detoxifying because it helps rid the body of waste.  The result? Clearer, more radiant skin.  Artichokes also contain rutin, an antioxidant that reduces inflammation throughout the body, so skin appears plumper and less red.

4. Strawberries
Why they make you pretty: This sweet fruit is loaded with vitamin C, an immune-boosting antioxidant that stimulates collagen production and reduces damage from free radicals, those nasty molecules that cause skin to age prematurely.  Strawberries also contain malic acid, a natural astringent that can help removc discoloration from teeth.  Also try Blueberries, kiwis and oranges.

5. Sweet Potato
Why it make you pretty: Full of fiber, this tasty, orange complex carb is also high in vitamin A, an antioxidant that keeps skin fresh, smooth and clear.  (This topical version of vitamin A-a derivative known as tretinoin-is the main ingredient in many prescription acne and anti-wrinkle creams).  Also try Carrots and tomatoes.

6. Acai
Why it makes you pretty: Known as a super fruit, this reddish purple brazilian berry is full of omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants (a couple of ounces have more free-radical fighting power then a glass of red wine).  Though it's difficult to find the real fruit outside of Brazil, many companies like Sambazon sell acai capsules, sorbet and other products.

7. Kale
Why it makes you pretty: This dark green, leafy veggie offers lots of fiber (for clear skin) and plenty of vitamin A and C (take that, wrinkles and discoloration!).  kale also has lutein, a nutrient that makes the whites of your eyes look brighter.  Also try Spinach.

8.  Wild Salmon
Why it makes you pretty: One of the best-known sources of skin-beautifying omega fatty acids, salmon reduces inflammation more effectively then almost any other food.  "It enhances radiance and reduces wrinkles and puffiness" says a Connecticut Dermatologist Nicholas Perricone, who is so enaored with the fatty fish that he created a beauty diet based on it called The Wrinkle Cure.  Also try: Sardines and Mackerel.

9.  Quinoa
Hell yeah!  A Gluten-Free grain makes the Top Ten list in InStyle Magazine!! Woo Hoo!!

Why it makes you pretty: B-Complex vitamins in this nutty grain help skin glow and hair feel less dry.  Unlike many starches, quinoa does not contain gluten, a common but often overlooked source of food allergies.

10.  Kefir
Why it makes you pretty:  Probiotics in this tangy drink cleanse the digestive tract, so the skin appears clearer and more luminous.  Studies also show faster weight loss among people who drink kefir or eat yogurt, says Perricone.

Enjoy!

Magnolia Bakery-Cream Cheese Frosting

Another amazing frosting recipe from Magnolia!  I swear by these recipes, this is my go-to book for icing when I bake!! 1 pound (two 8-ounce packages) cream cheese, softened and cut into small pieces 6 tbsp. unsalted butter, softened and cut into small pieces 1 1/2 tsp. pure vanilla extract 5 cups sifted confectioners' sugar In a large bowl, on the medium speed of an electric mixer, beat the cream cheese and butter until smooth, about 3 minutes.  Add the vanilla and beat well.  Gradually add the sugar, 1 cup at a time, beating continuously until smooth and creamy.  Cover and refrigerate icing for 2-3 hours, but no longer, to thicken before using. Makes enough for one 2-or 3-layer 9-inch cake Enjoy! xoxo Julie www.goodiegoodiegluten-free.blogspot.com

Not All Advil Is Gluten-Free!!!

After last night's POST , GF Advil was on my mind and I decided to call Advil/Pfizer this morning to get some more clarification.  In response to my post last night I advised through the website that Advil Liqui-gels, Advil Migraine and Advil Liqui-Gels PM contain a wheat derivative.  After my phone call with a lovely representative I received more information. - ALL ADVIL LIQUI-GELS contain a wheat derivative .   ALL LIQUI-GELS.  So stop these immediately if you are taking the Liqui-gels.  You maybe getting sick from a medication rather then a food and this is so important to recognize!  Just steer clear of Liqui-Gels. -ALL FORMS OF ADVIL MIGRAINE contain gluten .  There is no further information if it is just the Liqui-Gels or the Tablets, Caplets and Gel-Caps.  Pfizer does not have this info therefore they informed me to steer clear of all Advil Migraine pills. Here is what IS GLUTEN-FREE FROM ADVIL: All Advil Tablets, Gel...

What's in The Gatorade You Are Drinking?

I don't know why I never blogged about this, but I have known it for some time.  And was just reminded of this the other day while I was at CVS and felt the need to spread the gluten-free word.  I also tweeted it. Did you know that certain Gatorade flavors like the fruit punch (red) flavor has caramel coloring in it?  Yup! It totally does. In the U.S. a processed product considered gluten-free has 20 or below 20ppm ( parts per million ).  Therefore products can seem gluten-free and even say gluten-free, even if they are not 100% gluten-free because our standards allow that and consider it Gluten-Free.   And different processed foods contain different levels of gluten-some contain less then 10ppm or even 5 parts per million.  That's lower but still...no cigar. The less you consume the better and the article I just found on Celiacdisease.about.com  points that the more under 20ppm/10/5ppm products you consume, the more gluten in your system...
