My First Time at Daybreaker

What is DAYBREAKER? Daybreaker is an a.m. sober dance party starting at 6a.m. - 9a.m. .  These are rotating parties, never held at the same place and only held every two-three weeks.  The event is rotated throughout Manhattan (amongst other hot cities),  and you never know where it's going to be until you get that email.   This is a word of mouth celebration of the present.  These parties are exclusive and a best kept  secret.   You send an email asking to be invited, you wait for a confirmation that you have been invited, and about 1 week prior to the scheduled event you get the email.  That special email that gives you a password so you can buy tickets and rejoice in this beautiful experience.  Only at that point are you given a little more information.  Tickets are not expensive, and quite reasonable. Sometimes there is one hour of yoga prior to the event, depending on where and when the event is held.   I...

20 Unique Ways to PIMP Your Tigernut Horchata

Hi guys! Have I told you about this new drink that I'm totally addicted to? So lately I'm loving Tigernut Horchata!  What is that?  Well it's a drink that tastes really good!   It's made from Tigernuts which may sound like nuts, but are actually a Mediterranean vegetable tuber root that is made into a drink.  Sounds gross right?  Actually, It's so freaking delicious!  It reminds me of a light and beautiful iced coffee.   This vegetable and drink is allergen free: gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan, Paleo, grain-free and nut-free.  The actual dried veggie is sugar-free.  Free of almost everything and still tastes delish.  This drink is also considered a Pre-biotic which is great for gut flora.  And as a plus this drink is also Organic , so you know nothing but the best is getting into these drinks.  They come in a few flavors.   My favorite is the unsweetened version because it is very low in natural sugars.  Ju...

Nom Nom Paleo Cookbook

Hello Lovelies! When I was initially told I had to lead a strict Paleo lifestyle to repair the lining of my stomach that going gluten-free just did not heal, I thought.  O-M-G-What am I going to eat?  I was plagued by this.  And it reminded me of my initial days going gluten-free.  Not to mention using my creativity would be very hard with Paleo.  Or so I thought… After doing a google research on Paleo Lifestyle Blogs I came across a blog called Nom Nom Paleo .  Her name was Michelle Tam.  And her husband Henry Fong.   They were able to not only feed their family a Paleo lifestyle but thrive.  I was intrigued.   Her website made me remember that you can be creative with anything you put your mind to.  If you have the creativity gene like I do, then you know it never shuts itself off.  With that said, I found a few ideas from her website that guided me into my new Paleo lifestyle.   Score! Her meatballs recip...

Gluten-Free Chocolate Lover

Hey Lovelies! I love chocolate.  This should not come as a shocker, since I love sugar and often post about it.  And while eating chocolate every day is probably not your best bet, there is no reason we can't enjoy it on occasion. So what chocolates are gluten-free?  Having Celiac Disease or any allergy requires us to always read the ingredients and do the research online.  Often enough the ingredients may look safe, but in actuality are not. With that said, I would hate for you to buy a brand that doesn't suit your gluten-free needs.  I cannot bear to see another person get glutenized.   I cannot bear to see another fellow celiac feel deprived and cheat because they can't find a suitable chocolate brand that is gluten-free.   It's just so wrong. I'm always on the hunt for great chocolate.  And I have been doing a lot of taste testing, maybe a bit too much.  So now it's time to report.  Buckle your  seat belts!  Yo...

Gluten-Free Watercooler-Blue Smoke Restaurant

Yes please!  Oh how I love thee.  Ribs slathered in gluten free BBQ sauce!  A restaurant where I don't have to worry.   Blue Smoke has had gluten-free selections for as long as I can remember, and that also includes gluten free beers.  It's not a huge menu, but you have the option of 3-4 different kinds of BBQ ribs, a gluten-free beer selection and a few sides to choose from.  But it's BBQ and that's why I go there.  They are sooo good!   The waitstaff there is sooo so gluten free friendly.  They understand.  They are trained to understand.  And all you have to do is say you are gluten free.  No mix-ups at this dig! You must try this amazing spot!  Located on 116 E. 27th Street between Lexington and Park. Let me tease you with the meal I had last week… Enjoy Lovelies! xx Julie www.goodiegoodiegluten-free.blogspot.com

Gluten-Free Watercooler-Crumbs Bakery

Hello Lovelies! I am so pleased to announce that Crumbs Bakery has opened a Gluten-Free location on the East side of Greenwich Village on E. 8th Street, NYC!! This location opens tomorrow, October 3rd.  And it's not just gluten-free cupcakes in a gluten bakery.  Nope, not this location.  This location/facility/kitchen is dedicated to gluten-free and peanut-free. From what I have read through the research I did, it appears that Crumbs stock has plummeted in the last few years, almost leaving Crumbs no choice but to re-vamp.  And by re-vamping, they decided to dedicate a NYC location to the gluten-free.   I am happy about this for many reasons.  I saw a few comments by others on Grub Street mentioning that they were dissatisfied with this news because Crumbs are crap cupcakes.  I disagree!  So many people LOVE Crumbs!  And I think it's so great that there are upscale gluten-free bakeries like Tu-Lu's and Pip's, and then there are...

Vicks Nature Fusion Cold and Flu

Have you ever walked into a pharmacy or drug store looking for a gluten-free cough medicine?  Struggling to read ingredients you don't understand in hopes it is gluten-free?  Asking a Pharmacist who tell's you they either don't know, or it doesn't matter or they don't have time to do the research?  Story of my life as I am sure it is yours too!  As much as I like my neighborhood CVS or even Duane Read, these larger drug stores fail to be intimate with their customers needs. For cold & flu symptoms Vicks Nature Fusion Cold & Flu Relief is gluten-free and alcohol free! And their website confirms that all Vicks products are gluten-free. I will call and find out come Monday if there is any cross contamination. xx Julie

Natural Flower Extracts For Baking

I had to share this!  Recently I have been inspired to bake with the essence of flowers.  So many cakes and cookies use artificial flavorings and colorings that can have added hidden gluten.  It's always best to use natural. Icings, cakes, cookies galore: instead of artificial food coloring try veggies and fruit juices to get the color you desire.   Baby Cakes Vegan and GF Bakery uses Beet Juice, sometimes cherry juice to get the red color and other plant based foods to get other kinds of natural coloring.  I have used fresh Lemons and Oranges to get the flavor I desire and the frosting adapts to the color of the fruit.  Just a light tint.  But the taste is a WORLD of difference.  Instead of it tasting sugary, suppose you are using this for a buttercream icing, it tastes fresh, like I took a bite out of an orange.  It's quite lovely. Most recently I have been curious about cooking with flowers.  I bought two bundles of fresh l...

Gluten-Free Watercooler-Jennifer's Way Bakery

Has anyone been to Jennifer's Way GF Bakery yet?  I hear it's divine, and I haven't been quite yet.  My friend Collin mentioned that it was ab fab!  He said he tried everything, and he's not even gluten-free!  Who doesn't love a great bakery?  Allergy free or not!.  Celeb Jennifer Esposito is the owner of this fine spot located in the East Village on East 10th Street between 1st and Ave A. No gluten is brought into the facility, so you can stop worrying.  There is no cross contamination!  In addition to gluten-free, there are other "frees", such as: dairy-free, soy-free, refined sugar-free, peanut-free, allergy friendly, with vegan options and yeast free options! Now if you are going to go there, just a little reminder they are not open on Monday or Tuesdays!  Their are open Wednesday-Sunday, but fear not , they have long hours!  So if you are in need of a bakery fix either stock up on Sunday or return on Wednesday. Al...

Hey guys guess what!?   Pip's Place , an upscale gluten-free bakery located on the Upper East Side of NYC is opening it's second location in my hood!  Murray Hill!  So super excited!  Coming soon to 39th between Park and Lexington Avenues!  Woo Hoo, I am so excited, now I don't have to go all the way uptown to the 80's and First avenue! There were no details on the sign, as to when the bakery was coming, but the sign was huge, so I shall keep you all posted once I know. Enjoy! xoxo Julie www.goodiegoodiegluten-free.blogspot.com

Gluten-Free Watercooler-Bar Frites

Argh! I'm sure many of you can feel my frustration with dining out. Some of these waiter's just don't get the whole gluten-free thing! While dining at Bar Frites in Long Island I mention I'm gluten free. The confused look on the waiter's makes me nervous. So I explain. No flour, no bread or breadcrumbs, no sauces and marinades. He advises the plain steak no works.  No fries because they are contaminated. No caramelized onions because they are contaminated.  So that's what I ordered.  He was an annoyed waiter that didn't want to deal with my intolerance.  I was super aggravated.  Since when should lunch ever be a hassle? Sometimes being Celiac is frustrating. The comical part of the meal, is when I asked the waiter for plain butter and he told me butter is not gluten-free.  Aye! He looked at me and said "I don't think you can have butter".   And the crazy part?-this is not the first time a waiter/waitress has mistaken a dairy allergy ...

Gluten-Free Watercooler-Mozzarelli's Pizza

Yummy! After an afternoon at Home Depot in NYC I got to stop by at my most fav local GF pizza joint! It was delicious! If you haven't been you must! But remember only the square cut pies are gluten free so don't forget to specify! Xoxo Julie Www.goodiegoodiegluten-free.blogspot.com

Gluten-Free Watercooler-Hu Kitchen

I have way too many amazing and nice things to say about this beyond fantastic place! If you haven't eaten at Hu Kitchen then you must go ASAP! Everything In their facility is grain free, gluten free and dairy free and it tastes so good! Actually the kitchen is gluten free, So zero cross contamination. The only bad thing I can say is the coffee is gross-extra bitter.  Go get your coffee elsewhere and dine in or take-out with Hu Kitchen. I was in the area and stopped in for some lunch. I had the grain and dairy free veggie lasagna, the cauliflower mash-which looked and tasted like mashed potatoes and the sweet potato chunks with cashew cream. Divine! Located on 78 Fifth Avenue (near 13th street). It's so good I eat like a pig everything I go there!!! Enjoy! Xoxo Julie www.goodiegoodiegluten-free.blogspot.com

Ultimate Gluten-Free Pancake Mix Smackdown

I can't seem to get enough of pancakes! Gluten-free of course! I have to admit that the taste and texture of gf pancakes is different them what pancakes used to taste like-fluffy and light and often soggy with too much maple syrup. Prior to my diagnosis I hated pancakes and waffles. I always thought they were so heavy and filling. Just a few bites and I'd feel like I eaten a five course meal. I didn't realize I was a victim of gluten. No wonder I'd get so full so fast! I was eating the one thing my body was never able to digest. So now being gluten free for so long I started out with Bisquick gf pancake mix. They are good, don't get me wrong, but this mix is thick and not very pourable. So when they hit the pan they don't spread and they often burn quickly. They are very quick to make but just don't taste like that old school pancake. And oh how I miss the taste of that old school pancake. Then I tried Pamela's gf pancake baking mix. Y...

Is Quinoa Kosher?

Hey guys guess what!?  Pre-washed Quinoa is a great staple for a GF, kosher Passover!  (be careful with those processed brands of Quinoa Mixes, you'd be shocked to find wheat hiding in those)! In order for a product to be considered kosher for Passover rather then just kosher, it has to be a food that does NOT contain wheat, barley, oats, rye and spelt. (That has not come in contact with water). Questions? Also click HERE for a definition about Quinoa being Kosher for Passover with www.Chabad.org Enjoy! and Happy Passover! xoxo Julie www.goodiegoodiegluten-free.blogspot.com

Gluten-Free Watercooler-Pip's Place Cakery Opening

I have not yet been to Pip's Place , but I hear it's fantastic.  A bit expensive, but what isn't these days? and located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan on 1st Avenue between 89 and 90th Street.  Featured in the New York Times as the first upscale gluten-free bakery. (Featured in Daily News, CBS, SnackFixation, Next Magazine, Celiac Chics (used to be a blog, now a .com) There is no possibility of cross-contamination.  Woo Hoo.  They also serve coffee (total bonus) and sell the beans, made and roasted in Brooklyn.  Ah, NY made, nice.  Cappuccinos, latte's and coffee drinks galore, cakes, cookies, muffins, squares and more.  And total beyondo bonus?  They ship.  They ship throughout North America and in the Tri-State area.  Bam! Cakes   Bam! Muffins    Bam! Cookies   Bam! Squares   Bam! More Treats   Bam! Recently my friend mentioned to me that she bought the Gum Drop Loaf, and even t...

A Gluten-Free Taste Of THAI

I found these at Fairway Market, the new one that just opened up in Murray Hill, NYC...Awesome!  My mom had told me about them so I bought two.  To try.  For my blog of course. What's so great is that they don't have many calories, they are really good, all you need to make it is water and a microwave, because the packaging it comes in acts as the package you use, microwave safe. It took me about 4 minutes to make.   First you open the package and remove everything inside.  Fill the carton to the inside line.  The packaging says 1 cup, but I think it's really about 1 cup and a splash or two to meet the line.  Then you microwave it for 3 minutes with the water and the pasta, lid not closed.  Then you add in the other ingredients and sauce for an additional minute.  Then you take it out of the microwave (careful its hot) and add the peanuts.  And then it's done and ready to eat (it will be steaming).  It looked a l...

GF Ice Cream Cones

It's been soooo long since I even had a wafer cone, I was shocked to find them.  And they are delicious!  In fact I could eat them without the ice cream and still enjoy them.  Thankful for Goldbaums cones.  Stock up because they rock! Enjoy! xoxo Julie www.goodiegoodiegluten-free.blogspot.com
